U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best High Schools rankings represent students demonstrating outcomes above expectations in math, reading, and science assessments, qualifying scores on college-level exams, and graduation rates. A statistical protocol using weighted scores is used across six indicators to compute a “scorecard” rating. Schools are then ranked according to the metrics.

The U.S. News and World Report defines college readiness as the number of seniors participating in an AP exam and the number of seniors scoring a 3 or higher. Curriculum Breadth is determined on the percentage of students taking more than one content area AP exam. The size of the senior class and the number choosing to participate in AP exams are important factors to consider in the analysis of the data.
